Jonathan Hudson, founder of Panztel

Panztel is a New Zealand company that in 2000 decided to start doing business in the UK.
Due to the problems of managing a business from such a remote location we looked for an individual who could:

1. Set up a sales and support office and hire the appropriate staff
2. Help negotiate agreements with suppliers
3. Build a Distribution Channel.
4. Secure the initial sales.

We identified Peter Wood due to his broad IT and Telecoms experience in Sales, Product Marketing and Support.
He joined Panztel in September 2000 as General Manager.
His initial task was to register the company; Panztel (UK) Ltd. and put in place the usual financial, legal and accounting arrangements.
This was followed by a search for suitable premises.
Peter eventually identified a small office in
South Wales and negotiated a short-term lease with the existing tenant.
We moved in during January 2001 and Peter arranged for furniture, telephones and IT infrastructure. Within a week of moving in we were fully operational.

On the staffing side of things, we needed an experienced sales manager who could manage the distribution channel. Peter identified a number of individuals and conducted first interviews. I then held the 2nd interviews and we agreed on the preferred candidates. Peter then sorted out employment contracts and terms and conditions. Peter also hired an assistant to run the office. Both employees have proven to be excellent choices.

Most of our sales are through resellers and software partners. Peter performed a great deal of research to find good partners. This involved desk research, attending trade shows and talking to potential customers. From this he developed a shortlist. Peter then met with a large number of potential partners and eventually signed agreements with 5 companies who are now Panztel's channel.

In parallel we were keen to sell our services directly to a small number of end users. Peter focussed on the Home Care and Cleaning Industries and secured orders from 4 companies, which provided valuable information and enabled us to train our staff. He also developed sales collateral for the UK market.

In June, we agreed with Peter that the Sales Manager was now up to speed and could take over the running of the office and support of our Channel so the assignment was complete.
